Project 1

Summary : In keeping with my desire to incorporate my film major with this sound class, I created my first project with found clips from films. I used tradmark studio sound logos to create and hollywood feel, added clips of mostly original soundtrack music from some of my favorite films, as well as my favorite Bladerunner quote, which I think brings a feel of being the "observer" which is what film is all about. I am uncertain how it will effect or contribute to my final project, but it does connect with my past art history. Its rough and hewn together on Protools, which I am just starting to learn. The best part about doing this was forcing myself to sit down and really tackle the software. It was also a lot of fun.

Project 2

My sound artist presentation is on Matmos, the gay experimental music duo made up of
M.C. Schmidt and Drew Daniel. Matmos takes it's name from the Jane Fonda sci-fi film
Barbarella, and the couple's personal record label Vague Terrain
takes its name from the publishing company that released the first Barbarella Comics.
Matmos style owes much to the pioneers of noise art that came before,
from Scheaffer to Cage. The group uses samples from anything at hand,
including but not limited to :
"....a bowed five string banjo, slowed down whistles and kisses, water hitting copper plates,
the runout groove of a vinyl record, a $5.00 electric guitar, liposuction surgery, cameras and VCRs,
chin implant surgery, contact microphones on human hair, violins, rat cages, tanks of helium, violas, human skulls,
cellos, peck horns, tubas, cards shuffling, field recordings of conversations in hot tubs, frequency response
tests for defective hearing aids, a steel guitar recorded in a sewer, electrical interference generated by laser eye surgery,
whoopee cushions and balloons, latex fetish clothing, rhinestones on a dinner plate, Polish trains, insects, ukelele,
aspirin tablets hitting a drum kit from across the room, dogs barking, people reading aloud, life support systems and inflatable
blankets, records chosen by the roll of dice, an acupuncture point detector conducting
electrical current through human skin, rock salt crunching underfoot..." -
From Matmos Offical Website *Matmos
I first became interested in Matmos through the album, A Chane to Cut is a Chance to Cure,
which was composed almost entirely of Operating Room sounds sampled during plastic surgery.
Have you ever heard remixed rhinoplasty? Now you can!
The couple lives and works in San Francisco, persuing both academic and musical careers.
They are frequently work with J.Lesser and Bjork.

No first hand experiance....looking forward to messing around with samples and making weird ambient soundclash projects

I can't program my way out of a paper bag. I can't even program my way into a paper bag.

What do you know and how interested are you in Free Culture, Open Source, and Programming?

I'm slowly trying teach myself some basic html and flash. I'm interested in all these things, just useless when it actually comes to codeing.

What kind of experience with building speakers and external sound hardware do you have?

I have friends that do sound and build systems for parties. I waste time in friends music studios playing with digidesign gear. I haul bass bins and sub woofers when asked nicely.

What type of installations / performances have you done?

performance art freaks me out. sound performace - laptop sets, sound art intallations, etc all seem to have a little more cred then painting yourself blue and eating a dozen cupcakes naked in dolores park.

I'm really into samlping and mixing found audio.

Do you play an instrument and what is the instrument(s)?

no real musical talent when it comes instuments.

a better understanding of audio software, digital music culture, podcasting, sampling.

weird experimental electronica like matmos, kid 606, kid koala......and the same classic rock that everyone loves, like tom petty.

What field trips would you like? (studio)

go out to club nights with interesting sound performance? spend a few hours downtown sampling random things for a project? get martin schmidt out of New Genres for an hour to come lecture in this class?

What is your secret weapon?

its a secret

Manifesto for the semester

I want to come away from this semester with a better understanding of audio software , primarily protools. The projects I want to work on will incorporate my major ( filmmaking ) by blending both audio and visual media. I would like to create multimedia projects of this sort in protools, because I know how to edit audio using video software such as Avid( which is also a product of digi design ) amd want to become more familar with editing and doing sound design for film on protools.

Proposal for Final Project

  • I want to create a piece that explore sound marketing.

We are surrounded by not only visual advertising logos, but aditory ones as well. Cell Phone rings, TV ad jingles, Production company riffs - all part of the endless stream of imprint marketing. I want to create a website that explores the history of sound marketing and its place in our culture, and incorporates various sound projects I've done over the year. It will feature a interactive scrapbook of ad jingles and sound slogans. I want it to combine two kinds of final project into one - term paper and art project. This will also give me the chance to teach myself some html and basic flash programming, do internet research, and collect samples.
