Project Proposal

Proposed by: Jose-Luis Mejia

Video with speeches and music tracks

  • There are two components to the project, sound and image.
  • Sound: This will involve sound bites from speeches and/or interviews from various figures like; Rigoberta Minchu, Malcolm X, Noam Chomsky, Martin Luther King, Cesar Chavez, etc. The statements will be organized to express one idea or a related message. The words will be the most dominant sounds, playing under that is music, but not necessarily the same song, genre, or instrument. It will be whatever best suits the words in terms of mood and expression, in order to emphasize certain parts, or best help the understanding and feeling of the piece.
  • Image: They will serve as the symbols and other imagery to make what’s being expressed more vivid in people’s minds. I will attempt to shoot as much of the video as possible, but if necessary will try to attain images from other sources, if they can better represent the message.
  • My purpose in producing this video is to show connections between the people and their messages, but more importantly bring up ideas, beliefs, and/or issues which might have been addressed or talked about a while back, but are still much alive today.

Synopsis

My department is film but am presently only familiar with video. I have a specific focus in most of my artwork and because of what it is will never run out of ideas for new work. The challenges arise in deciding how to approach a topic differently than others might or have, to make it interesting and effective. I like to make videos around; injustice impacting me and/or others globally, giving a voice to the underdog, sharing experiences of people that could benefit others, promoting positive causes, uplifting the folks in my communities, etc. I am driven to do this by sadness, anger, compassion, and a sense of personal responsibility I get from just knowing a few of the things going on in the world. My goal is to use video and film as the medium to spread awareness and start or continue a dialogue about the many things that must be addressed, since video is one of the main ways people get information. If I weren’t in this field I’d be working for non-profits and doing activist type work in other ways, though I will still do that, just not full time presently.
