Digitization Organization

Please help me brainstorm more on this and lets get this to happen.

An intermediate step to an all-digital world is to digitize analog content. While I'm not interested in some utopic vision of a pure binary lifestyle, nor digitization as salvation, the interest here is in making a banal service like FedexKinkos that converts your analog bits into varying levels of digital quality for a fee.

Also, one large emphasis for this project would be to offer quick and easy licensing of content with Creative Commons licenses, with heavy emphasis on public domain.

Another quick idea would be to set fees on some type of website for collective auctioning of original and duplication rights. This would be very valuable for artwork in this modern age.

Oh, there should be a private and public component to this project. The private component would be to do the service quite well in a corporate fashion, with high quality technology, and global locations. The public component would be to allow anyone to digitize their content and setup their own stations for digitization go feed excellent repositories that already exist like http://archive.org and http://wikipedia.org/

Rationale

The world has moved to digital technology for all data operations (input and output) however our bodies and external world are analog. Also, pre-computer, human knowledge and information were recorded in an analog means. There are two major areas this idea fits in:

  • To digitize this huge backlog of analog content that is pre-digital
  • To digitize the analog world

Another motive for doing this as well is that it will serve to educate the public on licensing, marking their content so people know what is permitted in its usage, and to encourage longevity of information.

The ultimate goal though is to contribute and build upon the past.

Roadmap

Ideally, this is a 6-month plan for connecting ideas up with their implementations. These steps might happen faster than 6 months depending upon interest.
