Deer Fang at Gray Area Gallery this Saturday

Lu’s art work is taking off. Our friend Josette from Gray Area Gallery contacted me out of the blue because she heard about Lu’s great artwork. The result is that Lu’s artwork is showing all Saturday night during an all female-themed event.

To take it a step further, I said to Lu, you gotta do something new too! Something I have been batting around for ages with Mark Hellar and others is an event where people’s hard drives can be played back. Well, Lu’s hard drive is being played back on 3 screens live for the last half of the night!

More from Lu’s blog:

This coming Saturday, my videos will be screening at Gray Area Gallery from 8PM-4AM. Man, it’s an 8 hours screening! It’s hard to do without some partying! So this is a pride party night with all female DJs from San Francisco and LA.

My videos will be projected on three screens in the main space. From 8-10PM, they will be showing “The Plum in the Golden Vase”, “The Unique Dancers”, “Panda Express”, “Bump’n Grind”, “Don’t Talk About Politics’. After 10PM and the rest of the night, three screens will shuffle through video clips from my hard drives. They are clips of out takes of above videos, videos I have never shown, and old works back to 2001. This become a project itself I call it “Scratch”. Watch out! Dangerous dangerous!!

Text from Gray Area Gallery:

This Saturday night we will be inviting friends and family over for a Female Themed Pride Party. We thought it would be fun to celebrate and are excited to welcome- 3 talented queer female djs from los angeles: ANON, DAISY-O, and KIM ANH that produce Booby Trap.
They will be rocking Pride Saturday alongside San Francisco’s own DJs QZEN, ALONA, and, SIMILAK CHYLD.

BOOBY TRAP
is a weekly boob-friendly dance party in East Hollywood that attracts a crowded floor of hot, sassy, and did we mention hot? Ladies dance to upbeat electro pop and new wave from DJs ANON, DAISY-O, and KIM ANH (http://www.myspace.com/clubboobytrap). While the Hollywood crowds flock to Sunset, the savvy ladies East of Highland head to Booby Trap.

GAB would like to invite you to a special evening dedicated to celebrating women in honor of San Francisco’s pride weekend. We will be showing selected pieces from DEER FANG and an installation in our mezzanine.

DEER FANG

is a video artist working in San Francisco and Guangzhou. Her earlier projects investigate the condition of video in art making and the dynamics within the production process through participation, improvisation, real-time and socialization. Her current work uses common formats from popular culture such as the news, reality TV show, music videos, and online videos to dissect culture and political meanings in the media and in our everyday society. Fang studied in School of Visual Art with Luca Buvoli and completed her BFA in Graphic Design in 2005. She received MFA in New Genres (Video+ Performance) at the San Francisco Art Institute with Tony Labat, Paul Kos and Okwui Enwezor in 2007.

8 - 10 pm: Reception for Deer Fang (free wine)
10pm to Late (after-hours): DJs and Performances

Free before 10 pm
$10 after

Event proceeds support GAB & Bitch Magazine “feminist response to pop culture”.

Audio Junkies: Overlap Salon 01 Max/MSP/Jitter Wednesday May 21 2008 - San Francisco

I think this new ongoing Overlap Salon that we are putting on through Overlap.org is going to be nice and fun. If you are into cutting edge music, audio performance, and the technologies related with these, I urge you to come out to this new regular event. Christopher posted more on Overlap.org about this:

This first Overlap Salon event brings together users of Cycling 74′s legendary “build-it-yourself” software universe Max/MSP/Jitter. Cool Max/MSP/Jitter nerds will be able to meet, exchange knowledge, advice, and software patches. Max/MSP/Jitter patches covered in the Salon will also be shared on Overlap.org following the event. All participants are required to bring your their own laptop, beer (if u want) and thinking cap. WIFI provided.

I will bring beer. I wonder if we have any more free beer at Creative Commons actually :) Anyone interested in coming to this and/or presenting? Let us/me know! If I talk about anything, it will be the anti-max/msp/jitter called PD which I used to hack on back in the UCSD-aze. Also, if you show up, maybe I will talk more about why Lil Wayne is so brilliant and use my Eeepc as an awesome DJ’ing platform.

Slides from ACIA and Asia Commons Conference in Taiwan

Quickly, here are the slides from my two different presentations. I had about 10 minutes on the panel to present the entire mouthfull below in hopes to scale up discussion:

Making Creative Commons Common in Asia (and Outward)

The VT Art Salon went quite well with several local artists coming out and presenting under the umbrella of Media Exchange 2 (like early Media Exchange). I talked about how no art production is simply an author sitting in a room drawing circles all day without input from the world (figuratively) and then proceeded to present Overlap.org, Fabricatorz, and the soon-to-re-released, Scalejournal.org.

Collaborative Models of Art Production, or Dispelling the Myths of Sole Authorship

Thanks to Christopher Adams and Sophie for setting up the VT Art Salon and to Tyng-Ruey Chuang for setting up the ACIA Commons conference and getting me here :)

ACIA Commons and VT Art Salon in Taipei Today

I’m presenting about Overlap.org, Fabricatorz.com and the soon to be updated Scalejournal.org under the umbrella, “Models of Collaborative Art Production, or Dispelling the Myths of Sole Authorship”.

Tomorrow I’m presenting about, Making Creative Commons Common in Asia: Effectively scaling Creative Commons community and business development strategies internationally in 2008 at ACIA: Asia and Commons in the Information Age at Academia Sinica in Taipei. Come on out if you are in the area! The entire conference will be brilliant. Tyng-Ruey never dissappoints.

Lu posted on here blog here about Taipei Tomorrow! 台北,明天出发!:

We are heading to Taipei tomorrow. In this five days trip, we will attend ACIA (Internationl Workshop on Asia and Commons in the Information Age) 資訊時代之亞洲與公眾創用國際研討會. On Friday night January 18, Jon Phillips, Christopher Adams, Wang Chunyan and I will be hosting Media Exchange 2 at VT Art Salon. Media Exchange 1 took place last winter, with a big group of artists and students lead by our artist friend Huang Xiaopeng in the new mega university town of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts campus. The initiative of the event was to present and discuss projects. Now it’s already one year! So to me it will be an “annual report” on my work.

Here is more information on Media Exchange 2. Sorry it’s a last minute call. But if you are in Taipei. Show up with your friends or your work!

Symbiosis Podcast on Overlap.org

I’ve been helping build Overlap.org for a couple of years now and the site is well up to spec. It aggregates feeds using feedwordpress, takes advantage of wordpress plugins quite extensively, and has had many bugs squashed (many more are to be found and fixed too ;).

The good news is that the site is well ready for more users and also, it has some really great content on it from live releases from the past Overlap events, and some custom releases as well from Willits and more.

What I’m most stoked about though right now is the addition of the Symbiosis podcast. I’ve been into dubstep for the last year or so, and am super super excited to have a killer podcast on Overlap.org pumping out dubstep to the masses. I’ve also learned a lot about dubstep and how nearly everyone from dubstep participates in dubstepforum.com. It would be great if this community could use ccHost to have a ccMixter-like site for collaboration on mixes, etc. Also, it would push this brilliant content over into the realm of Creative Commons-licensed content and also help it get adopted and licensed for commercial-use faster. (If anyone is interested in this, please do comment on this post and I’ll point ya in the right dir…)

If you haven’t gotten into it, download this podcast.
