More on the Jon Phillips 4.0 Launch

I just announced over on the CC site my job change. I will still be on the books with Creative Commons, but will not be a full time staff member any longer. While I have been a human interface for Creative Commons to people, businesses and organizations, particularly in the technology space, my role will change to be Business Development and Community Liaison.

I have been working for Creative Commons for the past 3 years. In that time, I’ve fully devoted myself because I wanted to “scratch an itch,” as its called in open source development circles. Over the last few months I have felt that I sufficiently scratched the itch. Through my contributions to Inkscape and Open Clip Art Library I met the best boss and coolest person in the world, Mike Linksvayer. I wanted to make CC easier for the free and open source world by creating a library to make CC licensing easy: Now we have liblicense and LicenseChooser.js. I wanted to see the expansion of an international public domain dedication that worked globally, as Open Clip Art Library wanted: Now we have CC Zero Waiver and soon a Universal Public Domain dedication.

Of course, along the way, there have been other projects which I’m massively happy I contributed to, such as brewing the ingredients for CC Salons, working on media sharing web engine ccHost, and then efforts to provide simple solutions to help people, businesses and organizations to use CC licensing: Case Studies, http://creativecommons.org/projects/metrics”>Metrics and Documentation project.

After August 2nd, the world will continue to be in great hands with new and ongoing staff members that are supporting the efforts of Creative Commons around the clock. The international community of CC Jurisdiction Projects has an amazing line-up of individuals globally that are handling relationships amazingly. And, I’m still on the books to keep facilitating when possible.

If you are curious what I am immediately working on, then you kind readers of my blog might realize that I’ve been spending a lot of time on the upcoming art exhibition, Cantocore, an international contemporary art project between San Francisco and Guangzhou, China August 30 - September 6th near the Guangzhou Triennial. I am also planning a large art show in San Francisco for Overlap, which is Overlapping Networks of Experimental Media and Culture with Free Tools, Releases, News and Events” at the Gray Area Gallery starting Sept 13, 2008 through Sept 27, 2008. There is much work associated with the above projects which will require most of my time. This includes websites, projects for the shows, wrangling of participants, producing books, and more.

Beyond these immediate plans, I am of course entertaining various consulting projects, speaking engangements, writing for various magazines, trying to finish my book CVS (maybe should be renamed SVN ;), and then set-up my own solo art show somewhere in the next year before I turn 30 next May 28! If you would like to talk about these projects, are interested in working together with me on them, and/or hiring me for various gigs, contact me!

Lu and I will be primarily living in Guangzhou this August, then I will be in Beijing this fall. Of course, I’m traveling much around the globe. I’m particularly interested in working with more projects and companies in China and Asia.

Regardless, I’m more than ever committed to Creative Commons as an idea and set of practical tools. I am super committed as well to building up the projects I’ve been working on for some time with new vigor and knowledge gained from experience over the last few years in working with people, companies, and organizations.

Here is more as well from the post on the CC site:

I’m in Sapporo for the CC Legal Day, Commons Research Mini-conference which the Metrics Project is but part, and to
further promote the CC Case Studies project. As Greg outlined so clearly last week and I presented at the launch of CC Singapore a few days ago,
this project is doing quite well with 112 submissions from around the world assisted by
a great system for supporting this community project, and even better brilliant people adding case studies daily!

Also, you kind readers might have noticed that we have launched and/or refreshed several projects over the last few weeks to prepare for a coming change. As of August, my role with Creative Commons will change from managing community and business development to being liaison in ongoing similar affairs. This also means that I will be spending most of my time on projects outside of Creative Commons — most still involve using Creative Commons licensing and technology.

I’m not leaving the culture of free and open, nor Creative Commons, both of which I have been involved with for some time. Rather, I will be, as of August 2nd, devoting most of my energy to projects I’ve been delaying or couldn’t do as effectively since I have been living and breathing Creative Commons. My job and peers at Creative Commons are amazing and working for CC, in my capacity at least which I can speak to, is a dream job. If anything, I will be pushing Creative Commons even more by action, projects, and facilitation in another capacity.

Thus, if you want to find out more about what I will be doing, you know where to find me. And, if I’ve been working with you, your business, your community, and/or organization, jon@creativecommons.org still works (and will so). I am continuing work on a couple of projects that have not launched in relationship to Open Library/PDWiki project. I also am on-demand still for speaking at events and conferences globally - particularly in Asia since I will be spending most time in China from August - December 2008. I’m still on the books and will facilitate any discussions to the appropriate people. I’m more excited that ever to keep growing the commons!

Cantocore.com Launched + Home Concert Preview Next WED

Over at Fabricatorz we launched the Cantocore.com website and are continuing to push on raising funds to fund selected artists projects. If you are in SF, we invite you to come to the Home Concert Preview next WED from 7-9. Tickets to the event are $50 and may be purchased at the door, or preferably, through paypal or contact jhoover.charles@gmail.com to process payment.

NOTE: If there is some other contribution to Cantocore by writing about the shows, contributing to the blog, helping record the event, please contact me to discuss bypassing ticket price.

Good friend Christopher Willits will be performing along with Chinese musician Ma Jie“>Ma Jie. Wine and snacks will be served as well! From the RSVP list it will be a great mix of interesting folks from the area. We have a cap of 70 people, so please do RSVP today. More about the launch, project, and Cantocore.com Home Concert Preview:

Hi all, welcome to a new project which is a collaboration between Fabricatorz and Garage Biennale. Here are two levels of scale about the project:

“Art show in Guangzhou, China in September 2008 and then in San Francisco November 2008.”

And, a few more sentences…

“Garage Biennale and the Fabricatorz are bringing you Cantocore, a research project investigating contemporary art and culture between Canton (Guangdong) and cities around the world. The initial focus is a contemporary art exhibition with two versions of the same show in San Francisco and Guangzhou, China.”

There is a solid line-up of artists working on projects at present for both shows with the main concept being the ideas of import and export where projects in both locations are the same, but different versions.

Lu re-blogged the Cantocore Home Concert Preview we are doing next WED in SF, and so, I’m pushing out this post about the Cantocore project which is a contemporary art show that Lu, myself and Justin Hoover are pushing out this early September and November. The first instance of Cantocore is to generate some funds to help in production of the artwork. No one is getting paid from the raising of monies to support art production, so we are putting on a concert to preview the artwork for the show.

Lu wrote about here:

What it will take to make an art show. You will need three things: Artists, Space and Money! Sometimes these three things don’t come so easy, don’t they?

These are the things we are pushing right now for Cantocore exhibition, a show in both Guangzhou China and San Francisco this fall. There is a home concert preview party coming Wednesday 7/23 to fund the production of the shows. I am not a very good sales woman, but really want to make this one works!

Visit Cantocore site for information about the show, artists, and detail about the preview concert. Performing musicians for the the preview concert are Ma Jie and Christopher Willits.

And then there is a follow-up post on the Cantocore website:

Cantocore Home Concert Preview is coming up next Wednesday July 23rd, 7-9 PM in San Francisco. Right now our RSVP deadline for this event is extended to Monday, July 21st. And tickets are on sale right now for $50 USD! All money goes to the production of the Cantocore exhibition in Guangzhou and San Francisco. And, all contributions will be rewarded with praise, promotion in printed materials and on this website.

This event is a preview of the coming exhibitions, and also a home concert featuring Chinese traditional instrument musician Ma Jie and electronic musician Christopher Willits.

To reserve your tickets please do one of the following:

Call Justin at 415-425-1647
Email: jhoover.charles@gmail.com
Or use Paypal option

We are eager to raise some funds from those interested in the ideas which will gain both a plug on the http://cantocore.com website and then in our printed material. Feel free to ask questions here on this blog post publicly, or send us email about this.

Please participate in this project and if in SF, RSVP by next MONDAY, July 21 to come to the Cantocore Home Concert Preview.

Go See Christopher Willits in China!

Go Check Out Lu Fang Art Show Next Wednesday at SFAI

I’m bummed out! Due to my Creative Commons responsibilities next Wednesday, I can’t physically get to my wife’s art opening next Wednesday. So, I will try to drive as many people as possible to the show. Please do go if you are in the San Francisco Bay Area! Its free and will be great! I will get to the after-party as soon as I can physically drive back from Creative Commons “Future of CC” night event which several of you are going to attend.

Check out Lu’s big installation:

My latest project “Don’t Talk About Politic” is being installed in “We Remember the Sun” exhibition, a group show in the Walter & McBean Galleries. Opening is this coming Wednesday, exhibition on view through September.

“Don’t Talk about Politic” is a two channel video installation. Proposed plan is as image followed, as well as exhibition statement written by Mary Ellyn Johnson. I have been working on this in the past several weeks. And I found out that if you use NTSC video camera to shoot video in a lighted studio in a PAL country, then your video will be possibly have flickering all through it. What a lesson! Luckily I am able to eliminate this unexpected effect because it was shot in a blue screen studio. I am very excited to see when all is installed. And it should be an interesting show!

Cantonese Hip-hop dancers Post Lil Wayne Lollipoppin

Right before Lu and I headed back to SF, where we are right now, I helped her shoot a video of some Cantonese hip-hop dancers in Guangzhou. We had so much fun playing some loud bass and seeing these goes go for it! Totally amazing! Here is an excerpts from lu’s site.

These are pictures from my video shoot in Guangzhou 2 weeks ago. The video is for the new project titled “Don’t Talk About Politic”. I am working on the editing right now…

Aunt Dorothy is Pro-Obama (Who is Pro Mao Ze Donald?)

hangzhou, mcdonalds

Lu and I arrived back to SF for a couple of months in a’Merica today to the lovely immigration control guy who wouldn’t even look at us. We had to ask ourselves, geez, does this guy really want us to come into the country or not? I feel for all who have to go through the gates to the golden promise land who don’t have a passport and get looked down at by immigration officers. On a positive note, My Aunt Dorothy is amazing and gives me great hope for America. Here is an exchange between us she said ok to blog:

Hi Jon this is Aunt Dorothy Yeah yeah I’ve already voted absentee at the sr. citizen center about 2 weeks ago and my vote is recorded for OBAMA. Betty sent me somethin;g she got in email about obama too and i just wrote back and told her if she would read his book she’d find out all about his early growing-up life and some ;of the thin;gs in it were also in the book. and i told her i really like his approach and presentations.and beliefs. He’s a very intelligent man. Politics can really get nasty. The Il teaachers’ association came out today in favor of Obama. i do think McCain is the best in republican party. We are all pretty good up here.

Which I of course talked with her more about and she followed with this, which is such a common encounter in American families and esp. seems foreign to me in not interacting much with my extended family ;):

Hi Jon and Lu I’m so glad you will be home in US this weekend and so thankful you were not near each of the earthquake. I talked to Betty night before last for over an hour. She and Gary are pretty good. Youu are getting home the day after mike’s birthday I think you grandma said your dad and mom were meeting you in Kansas city on the 24th. Marcie is having her dad’s birthday party at her house on friday evening. we are just having pizza and birthday cake and ice cream. He will enjoy that. I hope this earthquake doesn’t extend to bother the upcoming Olympics.! All my family are pretty good–Mike has good and bad days with this MS that he has.and today was a bad one for him but he and sue met me at bishops for dinner. Tricia had a baby boy born on May 13 Hunter James and Marcie had a baby girl Bailey McKinsey born on Jan. 24th. I just watched the San Antonio Spurs beat New Orleans out on the 7th game of the basketball playoff. Goodnight Love you Aunt Dorothy

And, after this I asked if I can blog this all, upon which Aunt Dorothy replied:

Hi Jon Yes, is you want to put my political note on your blog go ahead. I don’t know about the cool part!!!Ha. Wish I always felt cool!!! it’a a beautiful day here in the Quad Cities not to be any rain for at least 3days yeah! I play bridge today aat 1130and then I play bingo tonight–kind of a fun day. I haven’t seen the little chipmunks and squirrels in my flower pots for a couple days-I put black pepper in them so just maybe they won’t like it and they’ll stay out of them~~ Have a good day Love Aunt Dorothy

Aunt Dorothy is cool. Lu and I just spent ~ 6 months living in Guangzhou, China with her parents, house worker Achanga and her almost 98 year old grandpa, Agong. That is the longest I’ve lived with family since I lived with my parents and the most time I’ve spent with someone as old as Agong, who exercises twice a day and has learned Chinese calligraphy from Lu’s dad in the last few years. Living with Lu’s family has been totally amazing. I hope to spend more time with my family now too and am eager to see what those interactions are like…I’m super excited to interact with Aunt Dorothy and am excited to see the Obama-fever break out the demographics of which I’m a part.

I missed the flame of shame in Guangzhou

Last week I took cc biz trip to Tokyo and missed the flame of shame outside our place in Guangzhou…totally bummed! Lu shot tons of HD footage of it and many photos of the endless security here…crazy!
