Cantocore Guangzhou Opening Friday

Bamboo scaffolding is a low resolution grid used to produce a higher resolution structure. Living in Guangzhou is inspirational because of the scale of buildings, real imaginations constructed, and accessibility to cheap materials and constant laborers.

Bamboo for #cantocore

Bamboo structure

The first version of the Bamboo structure being constructed. It has received a second revision now to make it much much stronger, all from 24 pieces of 7 meter bamboo.

For Cantocore, opening on friday here in Guangzhou from 8-10 PM, I’ve built, with the assistance of Chinese carpenters, a large 7 meter structure of bamboo which might be likened to Big Ben, hence, its a Chinese Big Ben.

I’ll have more notes about my project tomorrow at the unveiling :) Plus, have some code to write still (at the top of a 7 meter bamboo structure).

Cantocore Guangzhou Opening September 5

Cantocore Graphic

Last week we did a press barrage for the upcoming Cantocore show in Guangzhou, China! I know a lot of you are spread all throughout the globe, but nonetheless, I hope that anyone in the region can make it for the big September 5th Opening! It will be fantastic.

I wrote the exhibition text, have been coordinating fabrication, and somewhere in the midst trying to finish my project for the exhibition. We are up late right now finishing some projects and the publication is coming along nicely for the last minute print deadline for tomorrow :) Here is a sampling of the press text which you can read in full at cantocore.com:

Today the Cantocore Project and Ping Pong Space announced the upcoming contemporary art show, Cantocore: Import/Export in Guangzhou, China during September 2008. This initial show features contemporary artists from San Francisco and Guangzhou producing artwork around the more detailed relationship between import and export of culture and materials between Guangzhou, China and San Francisco. This first part of the Cantocore exhibition, Import, begins with an opening on Friday, September 5 from 8 PM at the brand new Ping Pong Space in Guangzhou, China. The show continues until Tuesday, September 16 with gallery hours of 2:00 PM until 10:00 PM daily. The second part of the show, Export, opens Sunday, September 21 at 8 PM until 10 PM when a special video screening developed by San Francisco’s Mission 17 titled “Stardusted” will be presented at the Ping Pong Bar from 10 PM until 11PM. The second half, Export, continues daily until Saturday, October 4 with daily hours from 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

The Cantocore Import/Export exhibition examines, through applied art practice, the relationship between import and export of culture between Guangzhou and San Francisco by asking a simple phrase: Are you Cantocore? Guangzhou, also called Canton, is the third most populous city in China and its province, Guangdong, is a major manufacturer of textiles and electronics for export to the United States. San Francisco has the largest import of Chinese immigrants of any US city, primarily from the Guangdong province. Chinese immigrants also created the largest Chinatown in North America in San Francisco. However, understanding the conceptual framework of Cantocore is not limited to geographic divisions, nor reductive dichotomies driven by post-colonial stereotypes such as East vs. West, nor Olympic nationalism pridefully paramount in China vs. US “non-political” sports matches. Cantocore is the reality of life versus the theory set forth by jurisdictions where people live.

The artists in the Cantocore exhibition were tasked with creating projects which explore import and export, materially and conceptually. Practically, how can one’s artwork be actualized either through fabrication locally in Guangzhou or imported from San Francisco? Guidelines for the creation of the work were left alone since modern strategies for creating artwork such as remaking, remixing, interpreting, pirating, translating, copying, and appropriating content, already espouse the Cantocore style. After the proposals were received from invited artists, curation of works took place based upon the processes, scope, location of artists and available resources to constitute this first Cantocore dialogue.

Curation for this show has been a group effort by Deer Fang, Justin Hoover, and Jon Phillips from the Cantocore Project and Wu Jay from Ping Pong Space (PPS). Layout and Design for the show is done by Pierre Picard (PPS) while wordsmithing has been handled by Nikita Choi (PPS), Jon Phillips and Deer Fang.

More on the Jon Phillips 4.0 Launch

I just announced over on the CC site my job change. I will still be on the books with Creative Commons, but will not be a full time staff member any longer. While I have been a human interface for Creative Commons to people, businesses and organizations, particularly in the technology space, my role will change to be Business Development and Community Liaison.

I have been working for Creative Commons for the past 3 years. In that time, I’ve fully devoted myself because I wanted to “scratch an itch,” as its called in open source development circles. Over the last few months I have felt that I sufficiently scratched the itch. Through my contributions to Inkscape and Open Clip Art Library I met the best boss and coolest person in the world, Mike Linksvayer. I wanted to make CC easier for the free and open source world by creating a library to make CC licensing easy: Now we have liblicense and LicenseChooser.js. I wanted to see the expansion of an international public domain dedication that worked globally, as Open Clip Art Library wanted: Now we have CC Zero Waiver and soon a Universal Public Domain dedication.

Of course, along the way, there have been other projects which I’m massively happy I contributed to, such as brewing the ingredients for CC Salons, working on media sharing web engine ccHost, and then efforts to provide simple solutions to help people, businesses and organizations to use CC licensing: Case Studies, http://creativecommons.org/projects/metrics”>Metrics and Documentation project.

After August 2nd, the world will continue to be in great hands with new and ongoing staff members that are supporting the efforts of Creative Commons around the clock. The international community of CC Jurisdiction Projects has an amazing line-up of individuals globally that are handling relationships amazingly. And, I’m still on the books to keep facilitating when possible.

If you are curious what I am immediately working on, then you kind readers of my blog might realize that I’ve been spending a lot of time on the upcoming art exhibition, Cantocore, an international contemporary art project between San Francisco and Guangzhou, China August 30 - September 6th near the Guangzhou Triennial. I am also planning a large art show in San Francisco for Overlap, which is Overlapping Networks of Experimental Media and Culture with Free Tools, Releases, News and Events” at the Gray Area Gallery starting Sept 13, 2008 through Sept 27, 2008. There is much work associated with the above projects which will require most of my time. This includes websites, projects for the shows, wrangling of participants, producing books, and more.

Beyond these immediate plans, I am of course entertaining various consulting projects, speaking engangements, writing for various magazines, trying to finish my book CVS (maybe should be renamed SVN ;), and then set-up my own solo art show somewhere in the next year before I turn 30 next May 28! If you would like to talk about these projects, are interested in working together with me on them, and/or hiring me for various gigs, contact me!

Lu and I will be primarily living in Guangzhou this August, then I will be in Beijing this fall. Of course, I’m traveling much around the globe. I’m particularly interested in working with more projects and companies in China and Asia.

Regardless, I’m more than ever committed to Creative Commons as an idea and set of practical tools. I am super committed as well to building up the projects I’ve been working on for some time with new vigor and knowledge gained from experience over the last few years in working with people, companies, and organizations.

Here is more as well from the post on the CC site:

I’m in Sapporo for the CC Legal Day, Commons Research Mini-conference which the Metrics Project is but part, and to
further promote the CC Case Studies project. As Greg outlined so clearly last week and I presented at the launch of CC Singapore a few days ago,
this project is doing quite well with 112 submissions from around the world assisted by
a great system for supporting this community project, and even better brilliant people adding case studies daily!

Also, you kind readers might have noticed that we have launched and/or refreshed several projects over the last few weeks to prepare for a coming change. As of August, my role with Creative Commons will change from managing community and business development to being liaison in ongoing similar affairs. This also means that I will be spending most of my time on projects outside of Creative Commons — most still involve using Creative Commons licensing and technology.

I’m not leaving the culture of free and open, nor Creative Commons, both of which I have been involved with for some time. Rather, I will be, as of August 2nd, devoting most of my energy to projects I’ve been delaying or couldn’t do as effectively since I have been living and breathing Creative Commons. My job and peers at Creative Commons are amazing and working for CC, in my capacity at least which I can speak to, is a dream job. If anything, I will be pushing Creative Commons even more by action, projects, and facilitation in another capacity.

Thus, if you want to find out more about what I will be doing, you know where to find me. And, if I’ve been working with you, your business, your community, and/or organization, jon@creativecommons.org still works (and will so). I am continuing work on a couple of projects that have not launched in relationship to Open Library/PDWiki project. I also am on-demand still for speaking at events and conferences globally - particularly in Asia since I will be spending most time in China from August - December 2008. I’m still on the books and will facilitate any discussions to the appropriate people. I’m more excited that ever to keep growing the commons!

Deer Fang’s Don’t Talk About Politics Video Documentation

I have cool wife! Check out this documentation of her project on display now at McBean Gallery at SFAI in recently sunny San Francisco. The show is totally free and interesting.

Adam has helped me document the installation in the Walter & McBean Galleries. This is part of the exhibition “We Remember the Sun”, on view from now till Sept 19th. Documentation video-taped by Adam Barczak.

This documentation footage is quite great and feels like some type of 3d model rendering or something. Speaking of which my cousin, Brad Phillips, is here this week working on pulling together his resume, doing some 3d modeling of upcoming projects, and generally hanging out. Great to have him here!

Go See Christopher Willits in China!

Heya, my buddy Christopher Willits, who did a ccMixter remix contest previously, is playing in Southern China, including in Guangzhou, and please go see it for many different reasons! I wish I was in China to go see him play right now, but in SF for some more weeks.

Go Check Out Lu Fang Art Show Next Wednesday at SFAI

I’m bummed out! Due to my Creative Commons responsibilities next Wednesday, I can’t physically get to my wife’s art opening next Wednesday. So, I will try to drive as many people as possible to the show. Please do go if you are in the San Francisco Bay Area! Its free and will be great! I will get to the after-party as soon as I can physically drive back from Creative Commons “Future of CC” night event which several of you are going to attend.

Check out Lu’s big installation:

My latest project “Don’t Talk About Politic” is being installed in “We Remember the Sun” exhibition, a group show in the Walter & McBean Galleries. Opening is this coming Wednesday, exhibition on view through September.

“Don’t Talk about Politic” is a two channel video installation. Proposed plan is as image followed, as well as exhibition statement written by Mary Ellyn Johnson. I have been working on this in the past several weeks. And I found out that if you use NTSC video camera to shoot video in a lighted studio in a PAL country, then your video will be possibly have flickering all through it. What a lesson! Luckily I am able to eliminate this unexpected effect because it was shot in a blue screen studio. I am very excited to see when all is installed. And it should be an interesting show!

Cantonese Hip-hop dancers Post Lil Wayne Lollipoppin

Right before Lu and I headed back to SF, where we are right now, I helped her shoot a video of some Cantonese hip-hop dancers in Guangzhou. We had so much fun playing some loud bass and seeing these goes go for it! Totally amazing! Here is an excerpts from lu’s site.

These are pictures from my video shoot in Guangzhou 2 weeks ago. The video is for the new project titled “Don’t Talk About Politic”. I am working on the editing right now…
