Updated July 16, 2006 @ 11:36 pm

For all you Bay Area folks, the 3rd Overlap.org event is this coming Friday. Here is an excerpt from the announcement:

Overlap.org presents:

OVERLAP 03

The Bastard Prince (Handsome Boy Modeling School / Rondo Brothers)

The Life on Earth (Odd Shaped Case)

Willits DJ set (Ghostly International)

+ special guests

9:30 pm - close
The Hemlock Tavern
1131 Polk Street (between Post and Sutter) San Francisco, CA
$10

Looks like I’m going to get to test out my fun videomixing skills with some of that old school “desktop mixing” Matt Hope and I did at ICA London before. Anyone want to help me out? I asked Lu and Alex to help so far, but why not get some more fun video action up in that place.

Joseph Goguen Passed Away

Updated July 6, 2006 @ 4:48 pm

I just got informed by Fox that our mentor, Joseph Goguen, has passed away:

Professor Joseph Amadee Goguen passed away peacefully in the early
morning of July 3, 2006. He was a loving family member, friend,
colleague, mentor, and more to many of the people who are receiving
this message.

At 10:00 a.m., Saturday July 8th there will be a Sukhavati, a
traditional Buddhist service held for him. All are invited to attend
in order to provide a base of compassion and hospitality for his
transition. Immediately following the ceremony there will be a
celebration of his life and legacy including some refreshments and an
opportunity for anyone who wishes to share memories or thoughts of
Dr. Joseph Goguen.

Please provide this information or forward this message to anyone you
know who may be interested in attending and may have inadvertently
been omitted in this message.

Thank you very much in advance for all who attend or send their kind wishes.

Location:
Shambhala Center
3139 University St. (at Herman St.)
Art Produce Building

This is after his 65 year old Fetschrift which celebrated his accomplishments as the site reads:

Joseph Goguen is one of the most prominent computer scientists worldwide. His numerous research contributions span many topics and have changed the way we think about many concepts. Our views about data types, programming languages, software specification and verification, computational behavior, logics in computer science, semiotics, interface design, multimedia, and consciousness, to mention just some of the areas, have all been enriched in fundamental ways by his ideas.

On a personal note, although the time I studied with his is little. after my sister passed away, the weekly meetings as part of his Meaning and Computation Lab really helped me come out of a dark time in my life and reshape my direction with encouragement and jubilance.

His contributions to the world are so great and I can only hope that I live up to similar ideals and standards as he set in the academic, intellectual, and spiritual domains.
