Creative Commons: CC+ Announced! Enabling morePermissions beyond a standard CC license (and its NOT a license)

I see CC+ is blowing up on the web today. NOTE: It is NOT a new license, but a facilitation of morePermissions beyond ANY standard CC licenses. CC+ is CC license + Another agreement.

One goal is to help semanticize commercial transactions for free flow of business transactions, but also, to provide a mechanism to enable commercial interoperability on multiple levels. Yahoo! has integrated it at the “system level” so hopefully will get more adoption because of that as well…

I have been working overtime on getting this project launched on the Creative Commons side, and has been one of my major projects (along with working on Open Library, adding CC licensing to OLPC, and many other fund tasks. NOTE: All of these projects are great projects which involve so many more people than just me…I am just an instigator/agitator a lot of the time now :)

Here is the blog post Eric Steuer made about CC+:

We are very excited to announce the launch of the CC+ (aka CC Plus) and CC0 (aka CC Zero) programs. These are major additions to the Creative Commons array of legal tools.

In a nutshell, CC+ is a protocol to enable a simple way for users to get rights beyond those granted by a CC license. Meanwhile, CC0 is a protocol that enables people to either assert that a work has no legal restrictions attached to it or waive any rights associated with a work so it has no legal restrictions attached to it. The program also provides an easy way to sign these assertions or waivers.

Please read our press release about the launch of CC+ and CC0 for more information about how they work and who we’re collaborating with.

I’ll be writing more about CC0 (CCZero) shortly and how this will be a brilliant project for Open Clip Art Library, Open Font Library and other free and open content projects.

In Austin

I’m at the Radisson at SXSW. If anyone is here until next SUNDAY MARCH 18 (from now), hit me up…I’m here for the long haul!

Introducing cBlends and Fashion Remixing

I hate to do this, but I had to cross-post this project I’m moonlighting on:

cBlends Compilation

Deer Fang and I have been firming up some of the ideas behind the ideas of cultural blending’s first project, mixing re-used and inexpensive knock-off clothes. The old name, 50/50 Fashion didn’t quite portray the depth of the ideas and cultural welding is too large of a term to explain the ideas. Thus, cBlends is the title we decided upon which is easy to remember, uses a healthy metaphor of blending, learned from my good friend Fox’s research, and can standalone as a catchy clothing style/line.

Deer and I submitted the project to the versionfest07 and have also submitted it to Readymade magazine’s call for an issue on refashioning clothes.

Until then, please visit the cBlends page and create your own cBlends.

Other Sites Like Open Clip Art Library (aka, Open Content Libraries)

I’m promoting the idea of open content libraries this year much. Thus, I put up a wiki to try and collect other sites that are already accomplishing similar tasks like Open Clip Art Library and Open Font Library. It is called Open Content Library.

Right now this site is a wiki so that anyone can add their site. The idea though is that this could develop into a way to search many different sites’ open content.

For now, if you know of any general media/content categories, please add them to this wiki page so that we can get a better picture of what is out there. I’m specifically interested in what exists in the video and 3d model space, as I haven’t looked into it much.

NOTE: The Open Font Library logo competition is growing quickly. We hit 40 total submissions so far, this weekend. Please submit and join in the fun :)

SXSW March 10-18: Any Meetups?

I’m going to be at SXSW this year from March 10 - 18 and participating in tons of events. If you are going to be there and want to discuss various Open Source involvements and/or Creative Commons, contact me.

Here is an announcement/challenge for a big party with open bar that CC and Good magazine are puting on on Monday, March 12.

And, here are the more colorful renditions of the two big parties I will be dancing/drinking/talking at:

if you’re going to be in austin for sxsw, make sure to join me at one (or both) of the parties creative commons is a part of.

the first one is on monday, march 12th during sxsw interactive and is being hosted in collaboration with good magazine and moli. it’s a benefit event for cc and takes place at uncle flirty’s (6th st. at trinity). $20 gets you a yearlong subscription to good (with all of the money going to creative commons) and entry into the party, where you’ll find an open bar (sweet!), music provided by the misshapes, and dj filip turbotito (of guns n bombs and ima robot), and interactive visuals from vj phi phenomenon. it’s gonna be crazy fun (and for a good cause) so subscribe and then rsvp by sending an email with your full name to rsvp@goodmagazine.com.

the second party is on saturday, march 17th during sxsw music and is being hosted with the superawesome people of tigerbeat6 and xlr8r magazine. it takes place at the beauty bar (7th st. at red river) and is tigerbeat6’s sxsw label showcase. look for performances from kid606, drop the lime, clipd beaks, star eyes, white williams, and oonceoonce. you can track this event on upcoming.org.

Here is a community event I’m participating in that is totally free:

If you live in Austin, and/or will be at SXSW on March 14 (4:30-6:30 PM at Austin History Center), I’m giving a FREE introduction to Creative Commons in affiliation with EFF-Austin. Here is the quick blurb I wrote up about the presentation:

In this presentation, Jon Phillips, Community Developer for Creative Commons, discusses how Creative Commons enables legal sharing, reuse, and remix. Contemporary relevant topics will be discussed in relationship to artists, musicians and attorneys. Come with your questions as this session will be highly interactive and focused on synthesis.

Also featuring: Entertainment Lawyer Deena Kalai and Attorney Ed Cavazos, Fish & Richardson, P.C.

For more information or to rsvp: rsvpcc at dcitexas.org

Presented by EFF-Austin and The Digital Convergence Initiative.

Jon Lebkowsky from EFF-Austin has written an article in Austin Chronicle which mentions this event and you may track the event on this upcoming.org posting.

Open Font Library Logo Competition Launched

OMG, I forgot to blog that we launched the Open Font Library Logo Competition yesterday. Blog it! Digg it! See the announcement below:

The Open Font Library (OFL.o, www.openfontlibrary.org) is proud to
announce the commencement of the Open Font Library Logo competition
today, February 26, 2007. Artists and designers of all ranges are
invited to make a logo to help identify the project. Judging will take
place by contributors to the project, Alex Roberts (bovinity),
Liftarn, and Zeimusu, who will select the winning logo. The last
chance to submit submissions is March 14, 2007 at 11:59 PM PST. After
that, the judges will select a logo within five days from the
submission closing date.

Other guidelines on the contest include that all submissions must be
dedicated to the public domain in the Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG)
format which may be edited in all major drawing application, like the
free SVG editor Inkscape (www.inkscape.org). Also, contributors may
upload as many submissions as they would like and optionally submit
bitmap graphics showing how their logo might look on the site. The
project is not wed to the current green color on the site, so please
feel free to think of how the site should be colored around your
submission.

The Open Font Library encourages all participants to join the Open
Font Library mailing list to discuss this competition and to
participate in the project. Also, for the time being, discussion about
this project is happening on channel #openclipart on irc.freenode.net
for any interested parties. While this competition is about creating a
great logo, the project hopes to interest hopeful font designers and
software developers in building up this project.

About Open Font Library

The Open Font Library’s (www.openfontlibrary.org) major goal is to
create an archive of freely usable fonts for anyone to download. If
this sounds familiar, its because it is newborn sister project to the
Open Clip Art Library (www.openclipart.org). While the OFL.o’s site is
fresh, with few fonts, the goal is to build it up so that it can be
useful to the free and open source communities (and world).

For More Information:

Please see http://openfontlibrary.org/?ccm=/OFLBLogo for details
about this contest. It closes March 14 at 11:59 PM PST.

Apply for Creative Commons Internship with Me

I’m not giving preferential treatment to anybody, and, I’m not the only one selecting my intern. So, make those application bulletproof. Anyway, please apply if you want to come work with CC (and me) this summer:

That’s right! Students, get your applications in before the end of the day on March 1 (which means PST for us in San Francisco reviewing applications).

As we announced before, we are picking one intern to help our tech team and another to help us with creating media and building up our community. If you want to spend the summer building the commons, living in San Francisco, and generally plugging into one of the most dynamic social networks offline in SF and on-line on the web, then please apply.

For both internships, there are several projects to work on. A good place to look is at our Labs demo/test site and Developer Challenges to get your heart beating faster. Then, for Media+Community internships, there will be some great work on some media-based (part-technical) projects like OLPC and FreeCulture.org.
