OpenMoko, OpenEmbedded, GMAE and Ubuntu Mobile Initiative

Let’s work together guys.

I know there is similar charge coming from other areas of the web, but ideally, OpenMoko+OpenEmbedded, the Gnome mobile plan and Ubuntu Mobile Initiative can share resources from the get-go.

Yes, I know diversity is good for survival, but OpenEmbedded has pioneered the system for development, we have great hardware support from OpenMoko, which is based upong GNOME/GTK, and then we have Ubuntu, which is by default a Gnome-based distro.

How can these projects better work together, to raise the level of water for everyone? Also, how can we as a community of users also better promote and push these projects to work together better?

IMO: There is such a strong organizational bias in .orgs to creating more and more projects, and we should really learn from open source’s approach to not reinvent the wheel, consolidate resources, and then and only then, maybe create a new project.

Let’s hook it up!

On another note, I’m working in the background on getting together with Michael Shiloh and sean from OpenMoko to have an OpenMoko presence at Makers Faire in the bay. More on this shortly…

Isn’t OpenMoko for mobile phones and GMAE and the Ubuntu Mobile Initiative for “mobile and embedded devices” such as internet tablets?

OpenMoko is a platform and the GMAE and Ubuntu plans are strategies. All are GTK-based. There is already cross-over on technology. I wish there was more discussion.

Not to mention Sun’s JavaFX Mobile, which they showed at JavaOne running on an OpenMoko (well, FIC) Neo1973. They have some version of Linux and they have a very complete Java ME implementation. And they have said they plan to GPL it eventually.
