This is a sad day! The US Senate and House have given the Bush administration its tool so they are protected against war crimes. More horrible is that the “Republican party is the party of torture.”
What can we do? This country is going down in flames it seems with destruction of the constitution, failed leadership, and the intelligent folk of the USA left powerless against the majority of local passive consumers.
What steps can citizens take to A.) Impeach Bush B.) secede from the USA C.) Get another passport?
Which brings up the next point. As an American what is the second-best backup-plan passport to get and how hard would it be to get this? I’m thinking a good backup plan would be E.U. citizenship. I would ideally like to keep my USA citizenship till the bitter end, but have my foot in the door somewhere else. If I could get Chinese citizenship and keep my American passport, I would.

I am interested on what your opinions are on some things, with all these comments you make.
First - truly it is the citizens of the country that make up what the covernment is - it is their belief’s that vote people into power.
some things that concern me about this country now, more than the things you have mentioned.
here:
the fact that a criminal can win a court case when this happened:
he was tresspassing, tried to break into the house from the roof, fell in through the roof when climbing on it and sued the guy who he was stealing from for having a unsturdy roof. And the fact that atleast 12 americans felt he was right and granted him that.
the fact that the NAACP can sew a jewish health clinic for closing on saturdays stating that: by virture of that clinic closing on saturdays they are forcing me to observe their religous holiday and by such they are unlawfully imposes their religious beliefs on others.
well guess what - don’t be a patron of that clinic then - no body was forcing them to use it.
that women are suing wal-mart for not carrying the morning after pill - and are trying to get the courts to force them to carry it.
Well what ever happend to just going to a business that does carry it - and give them your money - after all that is what business is about, serving customers. And obviously wal-mart had decided that was the kind of customer they did not want to serve. (granted this case is more complex and it is about one location not the whole chain, but the point stands that this customers believe that people should be forced to do what they want)
this stuff worries me that everyone is getting to wrapped up and thinking that they deserve everything.
even the katrina stuff is a good example, compare that with the fire that decimated san fransico, none if not hardly any federal funding went to that rebuilding - it was privately done and done in a very quick time. yet people in new orleans think other people should do it (ie the rest of america through their everyone’s taxes).
this country needs to bring up its sense of personal responsibility or it will not last - and lately when bush tries to do that by defining the personal responsibility of the interrogators people jump all over him. Which leads me to believe that you would find all the suits mentioned above as being just - and that is just scarry.
Please,
There is no such thing as E.U. citizenship. EU is a union of a number of countries. You can’t get a citizenship in south america (you can get one in countries in south america, but not south america itself)

Canada!
and everyone has seemingly forgotten about an even more important issue in this legislation: habeas corpus. Magna Carta anybody? the bill effectively denies habeas corpus. so does this mean it’s Ok if we don’t “torture” them but just decide to incarcerate them ad infinitum?
Yes, this is a good point. I hope this law is challenged and goes to court…oh, wait, how is the balance weighted now in the Supreme Court?
> Republican party is the party of torture
No, no, you dont understand. It is not torture it is “rendition” which is something completely different.
> backup-plan passport
You know the way everyone says they are Irish? (And in case you dont approximately 2 billion people claim Irish ancestry, and more power to them.) Well if you have an Irish grandparent an Irish passport might be an option. There are more than a few British people with Irish ancestry who get passports for political reasons, such as travelling to politically sensitve coutntries, particularly in the Middle East. Ireland is (sort of) neutral (not really) and the per-capita spending on foreign aid is relatively high and comes with relatively few strings attached so we tend to be well liked in foreign countries, but that only goes so far.
Hmmm…I need to check out Irish citizenship…
