I just lost 4 hours to gentoo build problems

Yes, that’s right. I upgraded mysql to solve some issues with ccmixter.org and my upgrade led me down an amazing amount of rabbit holes.

If you are upgrading to the latest dev-db/mysql-4.1.14 then you will have to upgrade dev-php/mod_php-4.4.0-r9 which requires that you first emerge prior to this, net-libs/libwww, which links the proper new libmysql.so.14. How annoying!

Hopefully by posting this I will help someone else…I eventually found the bug in another person’s blog post.

There have been lots of big changes with php that just hit stable, as well. http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/php/php-upgrading.xml is a solid guide. In essence, you should be using dev-lang/php for all of your PHP needs: cgi, cli, mod_php.

    Excellent…thanks for posting about that.

Sometimes I just hit walls in Gentoo, but it is still my favorite distro hands-down and conceptually.
