Demolition Derbys + Hecklers

That’s right, who wants to drive an old car in a demolition derby?

Thanks to everyone who stopped by rxgallery for last nights dorkbot. Thanks also to the guy who heckled me and others throughout the evening as I spoke about how to build online communities. Check out the pictures and listen to the podcast here. I’m sure you can hear the heckling in the podcast. :) I wonder how many people showed up last night. The gallery seemed completely packed with much good feedback, questions and comments. Overall, a very different crowd than I normal.

What a week…

Everything is due for me at the same time: writings, articles, class notes, etc.

Finally, I caught up on some sleep last night and now for the daily deluge of what has happened this last week:

  • Google Blog Search is great and more importantly, includes RSS support.
  • Bryce keeps posting about his great idea Granny Linux. I wish Bryce and my other Open Source colleagues had access to funds to work on all of these great ideas. Bryce, keep on pushing the Granny Linux page. I think you should setup a wiki on your site and keep detailing these new ideas and then hopefully, that content can be moved to a proper project when there is time. (I have setup a wiki on my site to mix and bake ideas, and it is working well)
  • New York Times is headed for a fall. Honestly, they are heading into a subscription model and ppl. on the web will not pay it. “As link targets in the blogosphere, those columnists, carrying the Times brand, will fall right off the radar.”

What! Suprnova.org is trying to rekindle their community’s flame. I think that Sloncek, the head of that community, has really messed up. The community has moved on! Isohunt and Torrentspy are much better anyhow than suprnova.

Getting Busier

Sooooo, now I’m teaching at SFAI, have been hired by Creative Commons, and am working on a few fellowship proposals I’ve been nominated for…things are heating up! (I’ll talk more about working at CC later)

Hey, I speak tomorrow at Dorkbot at rxgallery in downtown sf. I will be talking about HOWTO build an online community using Inkscape and Open Clip Art Library as examples.

Sunday Runday

Good afternoon folks :) Sundays in the mission are quite nice and my fav. coffee shop, ritual, is quite full as always. However, I quite prefer the many ppl. in here rather than seclusion.

I just rocked out a bunch of admin. changes on http://www.openclipart.org, http://www.openfontlibrary.org, http://www.overlap.org, and http://www.rejon.org.

Great things are on the horizon. I have a teaching gig at SF Art Institute and many great activities planned ahead. I have another gig that I just have to get the paper work filled out and then I will publicize about it this week. Cool?

  • http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Blackwater_Mercenaries_Used_in_New_Orleans - I’m really freaked out by the increasing use of for-hire mercenaries by our government
  • http://wiki.nola-intel.org - New Orleans wiki page for the disaster
  • http://threadbox.net/index.php/archives/2005/08/11/mixxx-tutorial/#more-139 - Cool tutorial on using mixxx for mixing

Thanks to Eric Anholt for hooking up a bunch of changes on http://www.freedesktop.org/ for me. He is a great guy!

What a weird photo with all the a-team holding guns.

SFAI

Here is a link to the free public programs at sfai.

I’m starting to track down galleries in SF:

  • http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/13.09/sacks.html - digital art galleries are taking off
  • http://www.theminutemen.com - check it out, mike watt’s old band…
  • http://research.yahoo.com/berkeley/ - Marc Davis is director of this new yahoo lab
  • http://ni9e.com/ - from neil

Check my head from planet.freedesktop.org

“For instance, the Net does not change the number of hours in the day or the number of things you can keep in your head. So an individual person has the same amount of time and energy — but more interesting choices about how to spend it. I hope we will use the Net to cross barriers and connect cultures.” — tim berners lee

First Day of Teaching at SFAI!

I’m speaking next week at dorkbot here in SF. Come check it out if you are in the area. It starts at 7:30 and is free! I’m going to do a quick presentation called “How to Build an Online Development Community.” This will give me a reason to work this idea out some more for some new writing I’m doing.
