Why? Couldn’t it be the German spelling of Werk I am going after? (original idea…but changed)
Werk is a germanic word, but not German. It is Dutch ;). Us Dutch usually get annoyed when mixed up with Germans. It feels (I guess) the same of an American would be mixed up with a Canadian. Frankly I don’t care about it, but a lot of my fellow country men do.
ps: In German you would say Arbeit (=work) or the noun arbeiten.
