Kanye speaks his opinion on NOLA. And, the federal government pulls in more troops. Great!
My family down in Buras (30 miles south of New Orleans) got out okay, but their house is under 18 feet of water.
Open source devs. are helping the efforts online.
- Adobe going to split Photoshop in CS3? I think this is a good move. Really, the whole groupware thing is not going places. I think better to have interoperable apps. Nothing is worse than a huge monolith that crashes. Modularization is the path to survival and rapid workflow.
- Looks like apple is getting ready to offer some form of networked document editing like Inkscape now supports, and subethaedit has enabled. Man, Apple just comes in and kills some open source projects and does this slightly revised better version that is slightly closed off and in turn, not really releasing the code that could really grow a community.
- Tattoo knowledge. learn. Check out tattoo machine.
- Great blog post about my fav. window manager, xfce.
- Doug Engelbart is my hero.
- So cool new distributed file system
- Lessig say public domain dead in 35 years!!!
- Article looking at virtual exchange rates, etc
- A cool media arts expo coming up in SEPT.
In another thought, I wonder how effective some system of auto-volunteering would have been compared to the top-down hierarchical model the government uses for this kind of Katrina situation. Hmmm…resource sharing and open source could do so much more as a model for this type of system. Hmmm…yes, I have not thought these things through whatsoever.
I’m totally getting interested in networked editing once more. I see crschmidt has advocated the need for such a piece of software like SubEthaEdit in the OSS world. I think I will look into this further. This is cool!
Aha, moonedit seems great! Here is a list of past attempts at synchronous networked document editing.

Kayne can speak his mind all he wants. That doesn’t mean that he should be taken seriously or that the should be given a free pass for his stupidity. NBC apparently has a clue as they blocked his statements on the West Coast feed. Saying “George Bush doesn’t care about black people” is wrong and beyond ridiculous. NO is 67% black so, duh, the majority of the people suffering in the disaster in NO are going to be, drumroll, black. As for Bush ording more troops in, if I’m not mistaken, the effort has not been federalized (nor should it be IMHO) so it’s up to the governor (Blanco) to ask for more troops which she has done (well before Kayne’s stupid statement.) The feds have been providing resources and should be making every effort to get there quickly — as it appears they have been doing. It’s the city then county then state as far as the chain of responsibility goes. But, please, don’t let your hatred of Bush make you support even dumber statements from people more idiotic than Kayne in the future…
You mean Kanye, right, not kayne.
I don’t hate bush.
Whoa, you are pretty passionate it seems. Anyhow, I guess you feel that you are pretty fired up about these things. I posted that just to see what ppl. thought.
Okay, I’m editing my post to remove any kinda misinterpreted opinions.
Jon,
Thanks for the response.
Yeah, sorry, I’d never heard of the guy before. Kanye it is then. And yeah, I’m fired up about it — for somebody to make such a stupid suggestion is worthy of contempt. Your post, while edited, still suggests a correlation between Kanye speaking his mind and the National Guard entering the city en-masse and that simply isn’t the case near as I can tell. I don’t know if that’s your point or if you’re simply making a laundry list of events. I’m not suggesting you alter your post further. In fact, I think the original should stand. That’s what comments are for.
Anyhow, I’d like to express the hope that your family is well and can get back to life ASAP. In my haste to submit the first time I didn’t express that.
