I’ve noted a few links about an individual dev. on the gimp who is wreaking havoc for them. Talk about a crank!

I’ve found the best way to deal with issues like this is offlist. However, if this kind of thing persists (which I haven’t had to deal with), then I think the Gimp folks are right in banning her. If she has become such a problem that it is hurting the project and destroying their image, they have tried to work with this person, and she takes no direction, then you guys have to cut her. I think though it should be decided by a consensus in the lead/core developers though, as this should ONLY be a last resort.

So many prayers going to ppl. in NOLA right now.

Whoa, another horrible event in Iraq with over 840 dead from a panic and stampede!!!

Pastebin looks super great

  1. Carol is certainly eccentric and vitriolic and although her behaviour is unfortunate it has been going on for a very long time. Others must take some responsibility for not having done something about it before now and what behaviour is considered acceptable. There are others who make very harsh rude comments, much but not all of that can be put down to non-native speakers using very crude and blunt form of English but Carol happens to be a native English speaker.
In the past I would mail people offlist and try to encourage them to ignore any rude or harsh comments on the gimp mailing lists, I wonder if maybe I could have done more. The atmosphere surrounding the whole project is horribly sour and it would take something massive to change it. You may have noticed my unusual comments on the Inkscape lists about the importance of community and being nice, or not saying anything if you have nothing nice to say. The days of flamewars or talkign down to users should be long gone. Flames will be met with flames and any project that acts hostile will generate a lot of hostility back from the wider community. Inkscape has learned the importance of being nice and in return for it we get a huge of amount of good word-of-mouth advertising we simply couldn’t buy for any amount of money. There is big value in being nice.

I’ve received hostile messages offlist from some GIMP developers myself, and I’ve saved a lot of them in case I ever get around to writing my “Why I hate the GIMP rant” but so far I have always found something better to do with my time although I have written several rants which will remain unpublished.

  2. Flames are lame. Yeah, flames can’t happen in the real world or it is a fight. So, now ppl. must realize that the real world maps onto the virtual world. Thus, good behavior is encouraged rather than social deviance (as in flames!).

That is not good if the vibe around the gimp is so negative. That is something that usually sticks. I hope that the devs. make an effort to be positive and correct negative communication.

Yeah, I guess in the end the best way to fix this in the gimp comm. is to join and make it positive. But, I’m overcommitted ;) One project at a time is my philosophy :)
