I’ve posted up some of my old writings like What is Open Source Art? and New Media in Seoul After Midnight. I put these snippets up because I get emails every once in a while asking about their status. Unfortunately I haven’t had much time since last September/October to work on these texts, but am looking forward to when I get funding and time to work on these writings and to finish CVS book.
I’m in the situation now where I’m in between having finished graduate school and when I start teaching at San Francisco Art Institute in mid-June. Once I start teaching to bring in the money I believe I will have more time to devote to these writings and Open Source. It is such a predicament these days for me to decide between contract work and other ways to earn money (and keep my integrity). All the people I have done work for have been great to put up with my Open Source antics and academic background, but I do feel that I need to be heading more in the academic path.
Another option I would like to pursue is making money by supporting associated projects, like Open Clip Art Library and Inkscape by working for clients to implement specific features they request. MRDOCS does this along with some of the other Scribus developers for Scribus development. I should ask them how this works and if that setup is working out.
Another option which I haven’t pursued as much as I should, is the various writing projects I have bitten off. I have CVS book pretty much done, and then several little articles that could get published various places. Also, there are many granting organization that would love some of these projects like Scale, which uses a new model of publishing with open source development style as its backbone.
In the end, I need time to pursue these projects and I’m back at square one which is not having enough time to work on these projects because of doing contract work to pay the bills. I guess its not that long until I start teaching, and once I do I’m going to fight for these gigs like its my last stand. Oh, and lets not forget that I want to get my more computer science heavy PhD started in the next year or two (I feel a bit behind on that too).
